A stack of firewood is a cozy drawing made almost entirely of circles. You build rows of round logs into a triangle, add rings to each log, and finish with a little axe on top. It is a great way to practice drawing circles and fitting shapes together.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The bottom row
Draw four circles side by side in a row, each one touching the next so the top edge looks like a bumpy wave. Then draw a smaller circle inside the log on the right end.
Step 3: The middle row
Draw three circles sitting in the dips between the bottom logs, with a small dot in the center of each. Add a small dot in the middle of the other bottom logs too.
Step 4: The top pair
Draw two circles side by side on top of the middle row, each one resting in a dip between two logs below. Put a small dot in the center of each.
Step 5: The axe and top log
Draw a long, skinny tilted rectangle for the axe handle. At its bottom, draw a lumpy axe head and a little wood chip beside it, then curve a crescent for the top log underneath.
Step 6: Rings in the bottom logs
Draw a medium circle around the center dot in each of the three bottom logs that still have just a dot. Now they have rings like the log on the right.
Step 7: Rings in the middle logs
Do the same for the three middle logs: draw a medium circle around the dot in the center of each one.
Step 8: Rings in the top logs
Finish the two logs in the top pair by drawing a medium circle around the dot in each one. Now every log has rings like a target.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a stack of firewood
- Draw the bottom row first and keep the circles about the same size, so the next row fits neatly in the dips.
- Make the dots in the centers first, then draw the rings around them. A wobbly ring still looks like real wood.
- The axe is the trickiest part. Draw the long handle first, then a lumpy head at its bottom so it rests on the top log.

Stack of firewood fun fact for kids
You can tell how old a tree was by counting the rings in a cut log. Each ring usually shows one year of growth.
