How to Draw a Lava Lamp (Easy Step by Step)

A lava lamp is fun to draw because the blobs can float anywhere you like. It is built from a tall bottle shape, a wide base, a wavy pool of wax, and a few teardrops and rings. Once the outline is down, it is mostly about filling the inside.

How to draw a lava lamp step by step

How to Draw a Lava Lamp · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: The glass body

Start at the bottom left and draw a long curve up, narrowing to a small rounded bump at the top. Then draw the other side coming back down, so it looks like a tall bottle with the bottom left open.

  2. Step 2: The lamp base

Draw a wide flat line near the bottom of the page. Then draw a slanted line up from each end to meet the bottom of the glass, so the base looks like a short, wide mountain.

  3. Step 3: Cap and bottom lines

Draw a short straight line across the narrow top to close off the cap. Then draw another straight line across the bottom of the glass, joining the two sides where it meets the base.

  4. Step 4: The wax pool

Sit a soft, bumpy hill on the bottom line inside the glass. Give the top a little dip in the middle, like a gentle wave.

  5. Step 5: Two big drops

Draw one teardrop near the top with its point facing down. Draw another one lower down with its point facing up, like a flame.

  6. Step 6: Floating bubbles

Draw a small ring on the left side and another on the right side, in the space between the two drops. Each ring is a little circle with a tiny empty circle inside it.

  7. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a lava lamp

  • Draw the glass as a tall bottle, narrow on top and wide at the bottom, and keep both sides matching by checking the middle of the page.
  • The teardrops are the trickiest part. Start with a round end, then pull the two sides together into a point.
  • Leave space between the blobs and the glass edge so they look like they are floating, not stuck to the sides.

How to color your lava lamp drawing

Try a glowing orange or pink for the wax and a pale yellow or light purple for the liquid, with a dark base. For a creative twist, give every blob a different color for a rainbow lamp.

Lava lamp fun fact for kids

Inside a real lava lamp, a lightbulb at the bottom warms up the wax. Warm wax gets lighter than the liquid around it, so it rises, then cools and sinks back down.

Questions about drawing a lava lamp
