  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The big round head

Start near the top of the page and draw a big rounded head. Begin low on the left, curve up and over the top, and come down the right side, leaving the bottom open for now.

  3. Step 3: Hair line

Draw a curved line across the top of the head, from one side to the other, to mark where the hair begins.

  4. Step 4: The jacket body

Under the head, draw a soft box shape for the jacket, with two straight sides and a curved bottom edge. Add a small pointed flap at the bottom right for a coat tail.

  5. Step 5: Face, bow tie and vest

Add two little dots for eyes and a curvy smile in the middle of the face. Then draw a wide collar line under the chin with a small bow tie in the middle and a V pointing down from it for the vest.

  6. Step 6: Arm with the baton

On the right side of the body, draw a long, skinny oval arm reaching up and out. At the top, add a small circle for the hand and a long straight stick poking out of it.

  7. Step 7: The other arm

On the left side, draw a short, bent arm hanging down from the shoulder along the jacket. Finish it with a small circle at the bottom for the hand.

  8. Step 8: Legs and shoes

Under the jacket, draw two short legs. At the bottom of each leg, draw a sideways oval for a shoe, with the shoes touching in the middle.

  9. Step 9: Floating music notes

On the left side of the page, draw three small circles stacked in a column. Give each circle a straight line going up with a little flag on top to make music notes.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing an orchestra conductor

  • Draw the head large and leave a good gap beneath it, so the bow tie and vest have room to fit.
  • The raised arm is the trickiest part. Draw two curved lines that sit close together and end in a small circle, so the arm stays slim.
  • Draw the baton as one quick, straight line. Rest your hand lightly and flick from the circle outward.
