How to draw a tin man step by step

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: Body and left arm

Draw a rounded barrel shape for the tummy, with flat top and bottom and gently curved sides. On the left side, add a bent, curved sleeve that ends in a small rounded hand.

  3. Step 3: The square head

Above the body, draw a wide rectangle with soft rounded corners for the head. Leave a small gap between the head and the body.

  4. Step 4: Funnel hat and details

Draw an upside-down trapezoid on top of the head for the funnel hat. Add a short band across the left wrist, two small dots near the bottom of the tummy, and two short dashes under the body where the legs will start.

  5. Step 5: Legs and boots

Under the body, draw two tall, narrow legs side by side. Finish each leg with a boot shaped like a bent foot pointing outward.

  6. Step 6: The right arm

On the right side, draw two curved lines that sweep out and down from the body like a bendy sleeve. Leave the end open for now.

  7. Step 7: Hand and flag

At the end of the arm, draw a small circle for the hand. Draw a long straight pole that goes up through the circle and a little way below it. At the top, add a flag with a flat top, a pointy corner and a rounded outer edge.

  8. Step 8: Face and neck

Draw two round dots for eyes in the head and a curved smile underneath. Add two short lines between the head and body for the neck, a tiny stick between the hat and head, and two small dots at the top of the tummy.

  9. Step 9: The heart

Draw a heart in the middle of the tummy. Start with two bumps at the top and bring the lines down to meet at a point.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a tin man

  • Draw the head as a light rectangle first, then round off the corners so they look soft and not too sharp.
  • The funnel hat is an upside-down trapezoid. Make the top line long and the bottom line short, and connect them with two slanting sides.
  • For the heart, draw two small bumps side by side and then bring the lines down to a point. If it looks lopsided, try again smaller.
