How to Draw a Foal (Easy Step by Step)
A foal is a baby horse, and this one is built mostly from circles and ovals. You start with a big round head, then add a tummy circle and ovals for the legs and hooves. A stripe down the face and a curly tail make it look like a real little horse.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Round head and mane
Draw a big circle near the top of the page for the foal's head. Wiggle the line into a small bumpy tuft at the top for the mane.
Step 3: Face and body start
Low on the head, draw two tiny dots side by side with a small curved smile between and just below them. Then draw two short curved lines that start at the bottom of the head and angle outward, and a short curve near the bottom of the page.
Step 4: Pointed ears
Draw a small pointed ear on each side of the top of the head, like a little triangle with a rounded tip. Let each ear touch the head circle beside the mane.
Step 5: Legs and feet
Draw a tall oval on each side below the head for the front legs. Then draw a wide, flat oval at the bottom of each leg for the feet.
Step 6: Hooves and tummy
Draw a small oval inside each foot to make the hooves. Then draw a circle in the middle of the body for the round tummy.
Step 7: The muzzle
Draw a wide oval low on the face that goes around the two dots and the smile. This is the foal's muzzle.
Step 8: Face stripe
Draw two long, nearly straight lines side by side. Start each one at the top of the muzzle and draw them up toward the middle of the head to make a stripe.
Step 9: Eyes
Add one round dot for an eye on each side of the stripe, about halfway up the head.
Step 10: The curly tail
Start at the side of the body near the bottom and draw a thick curved tail that sweeps out and curls up at the tip. Draw the second edge close beside the first so the tail has some thickness.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a foal
- Draw the head circle first and make it big. The muzzle oval sits low on the face around the dots and smile, so leave room in the bottom half of the head.
- The two stripe lines start at the top of the muzzle and go up the face side by side. Draw them slowly, and it is fine if they are a little wobbly.
- For the tail, start at the side of the body and draw one curved line, then add a second line close beside it. Curl the tip up at the end to make it look playful.

How to color your foal drawing
Try warm brown or golden for the head and body, with a white stripe on the face and a white tummy circle. For a creative twist, give your foal a rainbow mane and tail.
Foal fun fact for kids
A foal can stand up within about an hour after it is born, and it can walk and even run soon after. Wild horses need their babies to keep up with the herd.
Questions about drawing a foal
What shapes do I need to draw a foal?
You need a big circle for the head, a smaller circle for the tummy, and several ovals for the muzzle, legs, feet, and hooves. Two small triangles make the ears and a curved line makes the tail.
How do I make my foal look cuter?
Make the head extra big and keep the eyes small and wide apart. A tiny smile and a round tummy make it look even sweeter.
What is the hardest part of drawing a foal?
Most kids find the legs and the tail the trickiest. Draw them slowly, and try a light pencil line first so you can fix it.
