Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Face and chin
Start near the top and draw a curved line shaped like a letter J on its side. It makes the front of the mare's face, her rounded nose and her chin.
Step 3: Ears and forelock
Above the face line, draw two small pointy ears with round tips. Fill in the bumpy tuft of hair between them.
Step 4: Neck, chest and front legs
From the chin, draw a long line down for the neck and chest, then draw two skinny front legs. Add a gently curved line on the right for her back and one more long leg line.
Step 5: Mane and tail
Fill in a wavy mane that runs down the back of the neck, ending in soft bumps. Fill in a big swooping tail at the back, shaped like a long leaf.
Step 6: Hooves and back legs
Draw two more skinny legs on the far side of the body. Finish all four legs with a flat, rounded hoof at the bottom.
Step 7: Eye and nostrils
Add a round dot for the eye and two tiny dots for the nostrils near the nose.
Step 8: The little foal
Next to the mare, draw a smaller head with two pointy ears and a tuft of hair. Draw a line down the front of the body, then a little tail at the back.
Step 9: Foal's legs and face
Draw four short legs with flat hooves under the foal. Add a round dot for the eye and tiny dots on the nose and cheek.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a mare and her foal
- Make the mare's nose end rounder than the top of her face, so she looks gentle.
- Draw the foal's legs shorter than the mare's, so it looks like a little one.
- Leave space between the two horses before you start the foal, so its body does not bump into the mare's legs.
