An artichoke looks like a tight flower bud made of pointy, overlapping petals, and this one comes with a sweet little face. It is built from two side curves, a few pointed petals, a big round bottom with two leaves, and a short stem, so every piece is a shape you already know.

Step 1: Top side curves
Draw two curved lines like the tops of two little hills, one on the left and one on the right. Leave a gap between them in the middle.
Step 2: Top petals
Between the two hills, draw a tiny curved hill at the top. Then join it to each side curve with a wavy line that dips down and up, like the points of a small crown.
Step 3: Middle petal
Under the crown, draw a big pointed arch like a tulip petal. Start with a small dip on the left, curve up over the middle, and come down to a dip on the right.
Step 4: Round bottom and stem
Start at the bottom of the left side curve and sweep out and down in a big, round U shape. Bring the line up to the bottom of the right side curve, and add a short stem at the bottom center.
Step 5: Side leaf edges
Inside each side, draw a long curved line that starts at the top corner and sweeps down toward the stem. These lines turn the sides into two big leaves.
Step 6: Little stem curl
Next to the lower left of the stem, add a tiny curly squiggle, like a small bump on the stem. Keep it small and don't worry about making it perfect.
Step 7: Round eyes
Draw two round dots for eyes in the middle of the bud, with space between them. Color them in so they are nice and dark.
Step 8: A happy smile
Between the eyes, a little lower, draw a tiny smile made of two small curves joined in the middle, like a cat's mouth.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing an artichoke
- Draw the crown at the top lightly first. The little wavy points are the trickiest part, so make each one a small triangle and then round the tips.
- Make the two side leaves about the same size. Draw the left one, then look at it while you draw the right one so they match.
- Keep the eyes the same height and leave a little space between them, with the smile tucked in between and just below. Small features make the artichoke look extra cute.

How to color your artichoke drawing
Use soft greens for the bud and a lighter yellow-green for the middle petal, with a darker green on the side leaves. Try a warm brown or light green for the stem.
Artichoke fun fact for kids
The artichoke we eat is the flower bud of a thistle plant. If nobody picks it, the bud opens into a big, fuzzy purple flower.
Questions about drawing an artichoke
What shapes do I need to draw an artichoke?
You need two curved lines for the top, a pointed arch for the middle petal, a big round U shape for the bottom, and a short stem. Add two dots and a tiny curve for the face.
How do I make my artichoke look cuter?
Place the eyes with a little space between them and draw a small smile between them, a bit lower. Rounding off every point on the petals also makes it look softer and friendlier.
Why does my artichoke look flat?
Draw the long curved lines inside each side so the side leaves look like they hug the bud. Make the middle petal's arch sit inside the bud, not on its edge.
