How to draw a clown step by step

How to Draw a Clown · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The big round head

Start with a big, wide oval in the upper middle of your page. Leave a small gap at the very top, because the hat will sit there.

  3. Step 3: Curly hair puffs

On each side of the head, draw three round puffs stacked like a little ladder. Tuck each puff against the head so it touches the oval.

  4. Step 4: Little hat and flower

In the gap at the top of the head, draw a small hat with a flat bottom edge. Add a flower on top of it made from a few little loops that cross in the middle.

  5. Step 5: Eyes and nose

Make two small round dots for eyes, side by side in the middle of the face. Draw a small circle for the nose, centered between the eyes and a little lower.

  6. Step 6: The body

Under the head, draw a short body with two straight sides that slant in a little toward the bottom. Close it with a gently wavy line along the bottom edge.

  7. Step 7: Arms and hands

Draw a long, curved arm down each side of the body, wider at the top and ending in a small round hand. Each arm hugs the body from the shoulder down.

  8. Step 8: Big floppy shoes

Under the body, draw two wide, flat ovals side by side for the giant clown shoes. Leave a little space between them and a small gap under the body.

  9. Step 9: Smile, collar and buttons

Draw a small curved smile under the nose. Then add a row of little scallops around the neck for a ruffled collar, a column of round buttons down the front, two short legs joining the body to the shoes, and a short cuff line on each sleeve.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a clown

  • Draw the hair puffs after the head so you can tuck each one against its edge. Make the three on each side about the same size.
  • Keep the eyes small and the nose a little bigger. Put the eyes level with each other and the nose in the middle, just below them.
  • Draw the ruffled collar as small bumps, like a row of tiny rainbows. Add the buttons last, one under the other down the middle of the body.

Joseph Grimaldi was a famous English clown in the early 1800s. He painted his face white with bright makeup, and clowns are still sometimes called "Joeys" after him.
