How to Draw a Dragon Egg (Easy Step by Step)

A dragon egg is a fun mix of simple shapes: a big oval, wiggly zigzags, rows of rounded scales, and a bowl-shaped nest. The single watchful eye makes it feel like something magical is about to hatch. Kids can build it up one shape at a time and then make it their own.

How to Draw a Dragon Egg · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Egg top and sides

Draw a tall curve like an upside-down U, rounded and a little pointy at the top. Start at the bottom left, go up and over the top, and stop at the bottom right, leaving the bottom open for now.

  2. Step 2: The nest bowl

Draw a wide, gentle curve across the bottom of the egg, closing it off, and let both ends flick up and out. Then draw a deep, rounded bowl under that curve, like a big smile, and add a short dash inside the bowl near the bottom left.

  3. Step 3: The dragon eye

In the middle of the egg, draw a pointy oval like a lemon lying on its side. Add a short, tall line in the center of it for the pupil.

  4. Step 4: Zigzag stripes

Draw a zigzag line across the egg above the eye, going up and down like little mountains. Then draw a second zigzag below the eye, from one side of the egg to the other.

  5. Step 5: Top scales begin

At the top of the egg, draw a row of small rounded arches, like upside-down smiles, that touch each other. Then add a short wavy line and a little curved smile near the bottom right of the egg to start the next scales.

  6. Step 6: Tiny side curls

On each side of the egg, near the eye, draw a small curly hook that sticks out a little from the egg's edge. Make the two hooks match.

  7. Step 7: Scales and twigs

On the lower part of the egg, draw rows of rounded scales that overlap, like fish scales. Then draw a few short, curved dashes of different lengths inside the nest for twigs and straw.

  8. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a dragon egg

  • Draw the egg first and keep it tall and a little pointy on top. Every other part sits on or around it, so a good oval makes everything else easier.
  • The zigzags are the trickiest part. Make light dots for the peaks first, then connect the dots with straight lines so the points stay even.
  • For the scales, draw one small arch, then tuck the next arch beside it so they touch. Each new row should start between the arches of the row above.

How to color your dragon egg drawing

Try deep purple and teal on the egg with gold zigzag stripes, and brown and tan for the nest. For a creative twist, color the eye orange or green, as if the dragon inside is already watching you.

Dragon egg fun fact for kids

Real dragons are make-believe, but many real snake and lizard eggs have soft, leathery shells instead of hard ones like a chicken egg.

Questions about drawing a dragon egg

What shapes do I need to draw a dragon egg?

You need a tall oval for the egg, a pointy oval for the eye, zigzag lines for the stripes, and little arches for the scales. The nest is just a wide bowl shape with a curved rim and a few short dashes for twigs.

How do I make my dragon egg look more magical?

Add more scale rows and color the eye in a bright shade like orange or green. Making the zigzags and scales different colors also gives the egg a special look.

How do I draw scales that look even?

Start with a light row of dots where each arch will end, then draw one arch between each pair of dots. For the next row, shift over by half an arch so the scales overlap like roof tiles.
