How to Draw a Paleontologist (Easy Step by Step)
A paleontologist is a scientist who digs up dinosaur bones, and this one is ready for work with a big hat, a vest and a brush. The drawing is built from simple shapes: a round head, ovals for the hat and shoes, and a box for the vest. The bone and the brush give your picture a story.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: Head outline
Draw a big rounded U shape for the head. Leave it open at the top where the hat will sit, and stop with a small gap at the bottom on each side.
Step 3: The wide hat
Draw a long, flat oval across the top of the head for the hat brim. Then add a dome on top of the brim and a curvy band across the bottom of the dome.
Step 4: The vest body
Under the head, draw a box for the vest with a short flat line across the top. Make the bottom a little wider than the top.
Step 5: Zipper line
Draw one straight line down the middle of the vest, from the top to the bottom edge.
Step 6: Two shoes
Under the vest, draw two wide, flat ovals side by side so they touch in the middle.
Step 7: Face, collar and bone arm
Add two dots for eyes and a small curved smile. On the vest, draw a V for the collar, two short flat lines for pocket flaps, and two short lines for legs above the shoes. On the right side, draw a bent arm holding a bone with a round bump at each end, and add a few short lines on the left side of the vest.
Step 8: The brush arm
On the left side, draw a short oval arm that tilts down and a small circle for the hand. Add a thin handle going up and out, with a little oval brush at the top.
Step 9: Pockets
Draw a small square on each side of the zipper, just above the flat pocket lines.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a paleontologist
- Draw the hat brim as a long, flat oval first, then fit the dome on top so the two parts touch.
- The bone is the trickiest part. Draw a long thin shape first, then add a round bump at each end.
- Keep the two pockets about the same size by drawing the squares side by side at the same height.

Paleontologist fun fact for kids
Paleontologists often use soft brushes to clean dust off fossils so the old bones do not get scratched.
Questions about drawing a paleontologist
What shapes do I need to draw a paleontologist?
You need a rounded shape for the head, long ovals for the hat brim and shoes, and a box for the vest. Small circles and ovals make the hands, the bone and the brush.
How do I make my paleontologist look friendlier?
Draw the smile as a wide, gentle curve and keep the eyes as two round dots. Raising the bone arm like a wave also makes the scientist look happy.
What can a paleontologist hold?
You can draw a bone, a small brush, a hammer or a magnifying glass. Pick tools that fit in the hands you drew.
