Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The wide head
Draw a big wide oval near the top of your page. It should be wider than it is tall, like a squished egg lying on its side.
Step 3: Body and feet
Under the head, draw a big round hill shape for the belly, starting at the bottom corners of the head and curving out and down. Close it with a gently curved line along the bottom, then add a small curl on each side for the feet.
Step 4: Bulgy eyes
On top of the head, draw two little domes, one on the left and one on the right. Start each one on the head line, curve up and over, and come back down to the head line.
Step 5: Pupils
Draw a small dot in the middle of each eye. Color them in nice and dark.
Step 6: Nose and smile
Draw two tiny dots in the middle of the head for nostrils. Then draw one long, gentle smile that curves like a bowl below them.
Step 7: Spots and toes
Dot a few little spots across the belly, spaced out like a sprinkle of pepper. At the bottom, draw three short straight lines going up from the bottom edge for the toes.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a toad
- Make the head oval much wider than it is tall. A wide oval is what gives the toad its funny, flat-faced look.
- Draw the two eye domes the same size. Start the first one, then match the second one on the other side, so the toad does not look sleepy on one side.
- Keep the spots small and spread them out with space between each. If they crowd together, the belly will look busy instead of bumpy.

How to color your toad drawing
Try olive green or warm brown for the body, with a lighter yellow-green belly and shiny black pupils. You could also color the spots a darker brown to make them stand out.
Toad fun fact for kids
Toads can take in water through their skin. Instead of sipping with their mouths, they soak it up by sitting in a puddle.
