Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The round head
Draw the bottom of a big round head. Start at the left, curve down and around like a bowl, and stop at the right. Leave the top open for the hard hat.
Step 3: The hard hat
Draw a half circle on top of the head for the dome of the hat. Then draw a long, flat rounded bar across the bottom of the dome for the brim.
Step 4: Bib pocket and overalls
Under the chin, draw a rounded rectangle for the bib pocket, with a short strap going up on each side to the head. Then draw a few curved lines on the sides and bottom to start the baggy overalls.
Step 5: Face, arms and coal
Add two small dots for eyes and a little curved smile. Draw a bent arm on each side of the body, ending in a small circle for each hand, and put a dot in the middle of the pocket. On the left, draw a zigzag line of pointy peaks for the pile of coal.
Step 6: Boots
At the bottom of the overalls, draw an oval for the left boot next to the one already there. Add a few short curved lines to finish the bottom of the overalls.
Step 7: The pickaxe
Draw a long straight line for the handle, starting at the hand on the right and leaning up and to the right. At the top, draw a curved blade that sweeps out to a point, like a thin banana.
Step 8: The mine cart
On the left, under the pile of coal, draw a box that is wider at the top than at the bottom. Make the bottom a flat line.
Step 9: Cart wheels
Under the cart, draw two small U shapes for the wheels. Start each one at the bottom of the cart, curve down and around, and come back up.
Step 10: Lamp and light rays
Draw a small circle with a smaller circle inside it on the front of the hat for the headlamp. Add three short lines fanning out above the lamp like rays of light.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a miner
- Draw the head as an open bowl first, then add the hat brim as one long flat bar across the top. It is easier to keep straight when it has room.
- The pickaxe handle goes from the hand up to the right. Draw it as one straight line, then add the curved blade at the top, like a thin banana.
- Make the cart wider at the top than at the bottom, and draw the two U-shaped wheels right under it so it looks like it can roll.

Miner fun fact for kids
Miners wear hard hats with a lamp on the front because tunnels deep underground have no sunlight.
