How to Draw Humpty Dumpty (Easy Step by Step)

Humpty Dumpty is a smiling egg in a bow tie who sits on a brick wall, and he is made almost entirely from simple shapes. You will draw one big egg shape, a few circles and triangles, and a wall of rectangles. It is a great first character because the shapes are easy and the finished picture looks like a storybook page.

How to draw Humpty Dumpty step by step

How to Draw Humpty Dumpty · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Egg and wall corner

Start with a big tall egg shape, wider at the bottom and a little pointy at the top. Then, from the bottom left of the egg, draw a line going left and turn it down to start the corner of the wall.

  2. Step 2: Face

Draw two small round dots for eyes near the top of the egg. Add a small curved smile below them, like a little bowl.

  3. Step 3: Arms and hands

On each side of the egg, draw a short bent sleeve that starts at the egg's edge. At the end of each sleeve, add a small circle for a hand.

  4. Step 4: Bow tie

In the middle of the egg, below the smile, draw two triangles that point at each other, like a sideways bow. Then add a tiny knot in the center where they meet.

  5. Step 5: Legs, shoes, brick lines

Under the egg, draw two short legs with a few little stripes, and add a flat oval shoe at the bottom of each. Then draw short up-and-down lines spread across the wall area for the gaps between bricks.

  6. Step 6: Finish the wall

Finish the wall's rectangle by drawing the rest of the top line, the right side going down, and the bottom line back to the left corner. The egg now sits on top of the wall.

  7. Step 7: Brick rows

Draw long straight lines across the wall from one side to the other, making rows. These lines meet the short up-and-down lines to make the bricks.

  8. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing Humpty Dumpty

  • Draw the egg lightly first and make it taller than it is wide. If it looks like a circle, add a little more height at the top.
  • Start the wall line at the bottom left of the egg, and keep the wall low and long so the egg can sit on top of it.
  • Draw the short up-and-down lines on the wall first, then add the long rows across so the bricks look stacked.

Try a cream or pale yellow egg, a bright red bow tie, and warm orange and brown bricks. For a creative twist, give the egg a rainbow of crayon patches, as if he has been decorated with stickers.

Humpty Dumpty fun fact for kids

The Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme never says he is an egg. He became an egg in Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll, published in 1871.

Questions about drawing Humpty Dumpty

What shapes do I need to draw Humpty Dumpty?

You need an egg shape for the body, two dots and a curve for the face, two triangles for the bow tie, small circles for the hands, ovals for the shoes, and a long rectangle with rows of lines for the wall.

How do I make my Humpty Dumpty look cuter?

Place the eyes a little wide apart and make the smile small and round. A big bow tie and tiny hands also make him look friendlier.

Why does my egg look lopsided?

Try sketching a light oval first and then trace over it with a darker line. Turn the paper if one side is hard to reach, and it will come out smoother.
