How to Draw a Radish: easy drawing guide for kids

How to Draw a Radish (Easy Step by Step)

A radish is a round vegetable with leafy greens on top and a curly little tail at the bottom. This drawing starts with one big rounded shape for the root, then adds a bunch of leaves that spread out like a fan: one tall leaf in the middle and one wide leaf on each side. It is a great first veggie drawing because you only need curvy lines, wavy edges and a few straight lines.

How to draw a radish step by step

How to Draw a Radish · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The round root

Start at the top left and draw a curve that swoops down and around to a gentle point at the bottom, then sweeps back up on the right side. Leave the top open, because the leaves will cover it.

  3. Step 3: The curly tip

At the pointy bottom of the root, draw a short wiggly line that curls into a little hook, like a tiny question mark.

  4. Step 4: The leaf bunch

Just above the open top of the root, draw a small bumpy bunch of shapes where the leaves will grow from. Then draw a short slanted line from each side of the bunch down to the root's top edges, like little shoulders.

  5. Step 5: The tall middle leaf

Starting at the bunch, draw a tall leaf shape that goes up with a point at the top. Make the sides a little bumpy and wavy, then bring both sides back down to meet the bunch.

  6. Step 6: The middle leaf vein

Draw one straight line from the bunch up through the center of the tall leaf. Stop before you reach the pointy tip.

  7. Step 7: Small leaf curls

Inside the bottom of the tall leaf, draw a short curved line on each side of the center line. They start near the bunch and bend outward toward the leaf edge.

  8. Step 8: The two side leaves

Draw a wide leaf on the left and one on the right. Each one stretches out sideways with a bumpy, wavy edge and joins the shoulder lines near the top of the root.

  9. Step 9: Side leaf veins

Inside each side leaf, draw a straight line that slants from near the bunch out toward the leaf's outer tip. Make both lines match, one on each side.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a radish

  • Start with the round root and make it big. Leave plenty of room above it for the leaves.
  • The wavy edges of the leaves are the trickiest part. Draw little bumps and dips slowly instead of one long line, and do not worry if the sides do not match perfectly.
  • Draw the straight vein lines last. Let the side veins start near the leaf bunch so the leaves look like they all grow from one place.

How to color your radish drawing

Color the root bright pink or red, the leaves in two shades of green, and the curly tail pale white or cream. For a creative twist, try a purple radish.

Radish fun fact for kids

Radishes grow very fast. Some kinds are ready to pick about three or four weeks after planting the seed, so they are a favorite first plant for kids with a garden.

Questions about drawing a radish

What shapes do I need to draw a radish?

You need one big round shape for the root and three pointy leaf shapes with wavy edges. A few straight lines for the leaf veins and a small curly line for the tail finish it off.

How do I make my radish look different?

Try changing the colors. A radish can be red, pink, purple or white, and the leaves can be light or dark green.

Why does the radish have a curly tail?

The thin tail is the radish's taproot, the part that grows down into the soil. Drawing it with a little curl makes it look playful.
