Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The acorn body
Draw a big U shape that comes down to a soft point at the bottom. Leave the top open, because the cap will cover it.
Step 3: The cap
Draw a wide dome like a little hat over the top of the body. Close the bottom of the dome with a gently curved line that sits a bit wider than the body.
Step 4: Stem and cap pattern
Add a short, curvy stem sticking up from the top of the cap. Then draw a row of X shapes across the cap, with a few extra lines below them, like a woven basket.
Step 5: The happy face
Draw two small round dots for eyes, side by side in the lower middle of the body. Add a little curved smile between them, just below.
Step 6: The oak leaf outline
Next to the acorn, draw a small leaf with a short pointed tip at the top. Make the sides wiggle in and out in round bumps, then close it at the bottom.
Step 7: Leaf vein and stalk
Draw one straight line down the middle of the leaf, starting in the upper part. Let it stick out below the leaf as a tiny stalk.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing an acorn
- Draw the cap after the body so it sits right on top of the open edge, which makes it look like the cap is really on the nut.
- The criss-cross lines on the cap are the trickiest part. Make a row of X shapes first, then add the extra short lines below them.
- For the leaf, draw the bumps one at a time on each side, and do not worry if they are not the same. Real oak leaves are wobbly.

How to color your acorn drawing
Try warm brown for the nut, a darker brown for the cap, and orange and red for the leaf. For a twist, color the leaf in autumn stripes.
Acorn fun fact for kids
An acorn is the nut of an oak tree. Squirrels and jays bury acorns for winter, and the ones they forget about can grow into new oak trees.
