How to Draw a Haunted House (Easy Step by Step)

A haunted house is a great first spooky drawing because it is built from simple shapes: a triangle roof, a tall box for the walls, a circle, two small rectangles and an arch. The crooked windows and the little bat make it feel spooky without being scary. Anyone can finish it in one sitting.

How to draw a haunted house step by step

How to Draw a Haunted House · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: The pointy roof

Start at the top point and draw two curved lines going down and outward to make a tall triangle. Join them at the bottom with a gently curved line that sticks out a little past each side.

  2. Step 2: The tall walls

From under each end of the roof's bottom line, draw a long line going straight down. Then join the two lines at the bottom with a flat line for the ground.

  3. Step 3: The round window

Inside the roof, draw a small circle near the middle. Add a plus sign inside it, with one line going up and down and one going side to side.

  4. Step 4: Two wobbly windows

Draw two small tall rectangles with rounded corners on the walls, one on the left and one on the right. Tilt them a little so they look crooked.

  5. Step 5: The arched door

At the bottom in the middle, draw an upside-down U for the door. Bring both sides straight down until they touch the ground line.

  6. Step 6: The flying bat

Up in the sky beside the roof, draw a small wide bat shape. Make the top edge bumpy like two little hills, and the bottom edge wavy with a dip in the middle.

  7. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a haunted house

  • Let the roof's bottom line stick out a little past the walls. That overhang makes the roof look like a hat on top of the house.
  • Tilt the two small windows a little, so they are not perfectly straight. Crooked windows make the house look haunted, so wobbly is good.
  • The bat is the trickiest part. Draw the bumpy top edge first, then the wavy bottom edge, and don't worry about making both wings match.

Try a purple or deep blue sky with a dark gray house, and color the windows bright yellow so they look like they are glowing. For a creative twist, color the bat black or dark purple.

Haunted house fun fact for kids

Bats are the only mammals that can truly fly. Many bats find their way in the dark by making squeaks and listening for the echoes, which is called echolocation.
