How to Draw a Volcano (Easy Step by Step)
A volcano is a fun first mountain to draw because it is mostly one big shape like a triangle with the top cut off, plus a few friendly extras. You will use a flat-topped mountain, a curved line for the crater, two lava drips, a puffy cloud, and some lumpy rocks. A small smiling face turns a scary mountain into a cheerful character.

Step 1: Mountain outline
Draw a tall shape like a triangle with the top chopped flat and the corners rounded. Start at the flat top, draw two slanted sides going down, and close it with a straight line along the bottom.
Step 2: Front of the crater
At the flat top, draw a curved smile-shaped line that goes from the left corner to the right corner. Together with the flat top, it makes the opening look like a squished oval.
Step 3: Lava drips
Start at the front edge of the crater and draw two long drips running down the mountain. Make the left one fat and the right one skinny, and round off the bottom of each one.
Step 4: Cute face
Near the bottom of the mountain, draw two small round dots for eyes. Between them, a little lower, draw a small curved smile.
Step 5: Smoke cloud
Above the crater, draw a puffy cloud with a few bumps on top and a nearly flat bottom. Leave a little space between the cloud and the mountain.
Step 6: Flying rocks
Draw three small rounded rocks in the sky around the cloud: one on the left and two on the right, one higher and one lower. Make them lumpy blobs in slightly different sizes.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a volcano
- Make the bottom line a bit wider than the flat top so the mountain looks steady and strong.
- Draw each lava drip as a long upside-down U that starts at the crater edge and ends in a round bottom. Make one fat and one skinny.
- Draw the rocks in different sizes and put them at different heights so they look like they are flying out of the volcano.

Questions about drawing a volcano
What shapes do I need to draw a volcano?
You need a triangle shape with a flat top, a curved line across the top for the crater, and two long drip shapes for the lava. The cloud and rocks are just bumpy rounded blobs.
How do I make my volcano look cute?
Give it two round dots for eyes and a small smile, and keep the lines soft and curvy. Rounded lava drips and a puffy cloud help too.
How do I draw lava that looks like it is flowing?
Start two lines at the edge of the crater and run them down the mountain side by side. Join each pair at the bottom with a round curve, like a drip of honey.
