Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Body outline
Following the light oval, draw a long curved line down the left side, starting near the top and ending at the lower left. Then draw a shorter curved line down the right side. Leave gaps at the top right and along the bottom.
Step 3: The round head
On the upper right, draw a curved line like the letter C turned sideways, starting above the body and sweeping down and around to the right. This is the start of a round head.
Step 4: Face and comb
Finish the round head, then draw a bumpy comb on top with a few small bumps. Add a small triangle beak on the right, a little teardrop wattle hanging below it, and a dot for the eye.
Step 5: The wing
In the middle of the body, draw an upside-down U shape, like a rounded arch, with its two ends pointing down. This is the wing.
Step 6: The tail
On the left side of the body, draw a pointed leaf shape that sticks up and out. Start where it touches the body and finish with a sharp tip.
Step 7: The nest bowl
Under the hen, draw a wide bowl like a smiling boat. Start with a long, nearly straight line across the top, then curve the bottom line from one end to the other.
Step 8: Egg and straw mark
On the left, next to the hen, draw a curved line that starts at the edge of the nest, rises up and curves over toward the hen. This is the side of a little egg. Add one short curved mark in the middle of the nest for straw.
Step 9: Feathers and straw
Draw two short curved lines inside the wing for feathers. Add a tiny arch at the bottom of the egg where it meets the nest. Then draw short curvy marks along the nest for straw.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a hen
- Draw the body first, leaving gaps where the head and nest will go. Then add the head so it overlaps the body a little, like a ball resting on the front.
- The comb is the trickiest part. Think of it as a few small bumps in a row, like a tiny crown, and draw one bump at a time.
- Draw the nest after the hen, and let its top edge cross the bottom of her body. That makes her look like she is really sitting in it.

How to color your hen drawing
Try a warm brown or golden yellow hen with a bright red comb and wattle, an orange beak, and a straw-colored nest. For a creative twist, color the egg a surprise color, like pale blue or speckled pink.
Hen fun fact for kids
A hen turns her eggs many times a day while she sits on them, so the warmth reaches every side. Chicken eggs take about 21 days to hatch.
