How to Draw an Artist (Easy Step by Step)
This little painter wears a floppy beret and carries a palette and a brush. You build the whole artist from simple curves, ovals and a box, so it is a great first character drawing. The polka-dot shirt gives you a fun place to practice drawing dots.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Sides of the head
Draw two curved lines for the sides of the head, one on the left and one on the right. Each starts near the top, bulges out with a tiny ear bump, then curves in toward the bottom without meeting.
Step 3: The beret hat
Draw a wide, flat dome on top of the head like a squashed ball. Close it with a gently curved line across the bottom, then add a tiny stem on top.
Step 4: The shirt
Draw a short line across the bottom of the head for the neck. Under it, draw a box that is a bit taller than it is wide, with the bottom corners slightly rounded.
Step 5: Face, arms and dots
Add two small dot eyes and a little smile on the face, and a small V at the neck. Draw a few dots on the shirt, a curved arm down each side ending in a small circle hand, and two short lines at the bottom for legs. Add a few tiny circles beside the left hand for paint.
Step 6: Two oval shoes
Draw a wide oval at the bottom of each leg line for a shoe.
Step 7: Paint palette
Around the little paint circles next to the left hand, draw a bean or kidney shape for the palette. Let the line curve around the circles and end near the hand.
Step 8: The paintbrush
Draw a long, straight line leaning from the right hand up and out to the side. At the top, draw a small pointy leaf shape for the bristles and a short band where they meet the handle.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing an artist
- Draw the two sides of the head lightly, then tuck the beret over the top so it looks like it is sitting on the head.
- Keep the beret wider than the head. A big floppy hat looks more artistic and is easier to draw than a tight one.
- Draw the little paint circles first, then wrap the palette outline around them so none of the circles touch the edge.

How to color your artist drawing
Try a red beret, a blue shirt and a rainbow of paint dots on the palette. For a creative twist, make the shirt dots match the colors on the palette.
Artist fun fact for kids
A beret is a soft, flat, round cap that is traditionally made of wool. It has no brim, which is one reason painters have long liked to wear it.
