Step 1: Headcloth and flaps
Draw a wide dome for the top of the headcloth, then a curved band straight across under the dome. From each end of the band, draw a long floppy flap hanging down with a rounded bottom, and draw the inside edge of each flap to make a square opening for the face.
Step 2: Eyes and smile
Inside the square opening, add two small dots for eyes. Draw a little curved smile in the middle below them, and add a tiny curved line at the bottom of the left flap.
Step 3: The robe
Under the face, draw a curved top edge for the shoulders. From each end, draw lines sloping down and out to make a wide robe. Add a curved belt line across the middle, and finish with a wavy hem at the bottom.
Step 4: Legs and feet
Draw two short straight lines hanging down from the bottom of the robe for the legs. At the bottom of each leg, draw a wide oval for a foot, with the two ovals side by side.
Step 5: The arm and hand
On the right side, draw a long curved sleeve that starts at the shoulder and bends down and out. End it with a small hand shape at the bottom.
Step 6: The shepherd's staff
Start at the top right and curve the line over into a hook, like the top of a candy cane. Then draw a tall straight line all the way down past the hand to the ground.
Step 7: The little sheep
On the left, draw a fluffy cloud shape with a bumpy outline for the sheep's woolly body, and add two short lines underneath for legs. Then draw a curved sleeve coming down from the shoulder, ending in a small square hand that touches the sheep.
Step 8: The sheep's face
Draw a small rounded face on the left end of the cloud, with a curved line to show where the face meets the wool. Add one small dot for an eye.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a shepherd
- Draw the headcloth dome first, then the band and the two long flaps, so the face fits in the square opening between them.
- Make the sheep's cloud body with lots of small bumps instead of one smooth line. Bumps are what make it look woolly.
- Draw the staff with a steady hand: start with the curved hook at the top, then pull one long straight line down to the ground.

Try a brown robe, a striped red headcloth and a white or light gray sheep. For a creative twist, make the sheep rainbow colored.
Shepherd fun fact for kids
A shepherd's staff has a curved hook at the top. Shepherds have long used it to gently guide sheep and to reach a lamb that wandered off.
