Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The big head
Draw a big wide oval for the head, a little wider than it is tall. Make it nice and round and smooth.
Step 3: The pointy ears
On the top corners of the head, draw two pointy ears shaped like leaves or triangles with curvy sides. Start each ear at the edge of the head, go up to a point, and come back down to the head.
Step 4: Inside the ears
Inside each ear, draw one short curved line near the outer edge that follows the shape of the ear. This shows the inner part of the ear.
Step 5: The body
Under the head, draw a tall rounded shape for the chest and tummy, starting from both sides of the bottom of the head. Finish it at the bottom with two round paws side by side, with a little bump between them.
Step 6: The muzzle
In the middle of the face, draw two curved lines that start near the top of the head, swoop down and around to make a rounded snout shape, and meet at the bottom of the head.
Step 7: Eyes, nose and smile
Draw two round dots for eyes, one on each side of the face. Then fill in a rounded nose at the top of the muzzle and add a little line down from it that splits into a happy smile.
Step 8: The wavy chest line
Across the chest, draw a wavy zigzag line with soft, rounded points, going from one side of the body to the other. It makes a fun pattern like fluffy chest fur.
Step 9: The bushy tail
On the right side of the body, draw a curvy tail that sweeps out and up. Make two long curved lines that start at the body and join at the tip, with a little notch near the end for fluffy fur.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a German shepherd
- Draw the head oval first and make it big. Everything else is easier when the head is the right size.
- Make both ears about the same height, and draw the second ear while looking at the first one so they match.
- For the wavy line across the chest, make the points first with light dashes, then connect them with soft curves.
