  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The round head

Draw a big curve like a bowl for the head, a little wider than tall. Leave the top open where the hat band will sit.

  3. Step 3: The hat band

Across the top of the head, draw a long rounded rectangle for the hat band. Then draw a straight line inside it to make a stripe.

  4. Step 4: Hat top and feather

Start at the left end of the band and draw a line straight up, then across the top of the hat. End with a small leaf-shaped feather on the right.

  5. Step 5: Face, badge and hands

Finish the right side of the hat and add a small circle badge on the front. Draw two short curved lines for hair at the sides, two dots for eyes, a little smile, and a small circle on each side for the hands.

  6. Step 6: Body and straps

Under the head, draw a body shaped like a tall box with a V at the chest for the straps. Let the sides run down and turn out a little at the bottom.

  7. Step 7: The drum

At the bottom of the body, draw a wide flat oval for the top of the drum. Underneath it, draw a wavy band across the front.

  8. Step 8: Drumsticks

Draw a short slanted line going up from each hand, ending in a small circle at the tip.

  9. Step 9: Little shoes

At the bottom, draw two flat ovals side by side for the shoes. Add a short line joining them at the top.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a drummer boy

  • Draw the head curve first, then fit the hat band across the top so the two lines meet neatly on both sides.
  • The wavy band on the drum is the trickiest part. Make a light wavy line first, then go over it with bumps that are all about the same size.
  • Keep the drumsticks short and slanted, with a small circle at each tip, so they look like they are mid-beat.
