Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The stocking outline
Draw a boot shape: two long lines going down, with the left line stepping out at the ankle. Curve the bottom into a round toe on the left and a rounded heel on the right. Leave the top open, because the cuff will sit there.
Step 3: The fluffy cuff
Across the top of the stocking, draw a wide band like a puffy fold. Make the bottom edge a gentle curve and the two short sides a little bumpy. Leave the top of the band open.
Step 4: The lumps of coal
On top of the cuff, draw a bumpy cloud shape that sits on its upper edge. Make three or four round bumps along the top, then fill it in with black.
Step 5: The toe line
Start at the dip where the toe meets the stocking and draw a curved line down to the bottom edge. It splits off a rounded toe patch.
Step 6: Eyes and smile
In the middle of the stocking, draw two small round dots for eyes. Between them and a little lower, add a small curved smile.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a Christmas stocking with coal
- Draw the cuff before the coal. The coal sits on top of the cuff's upper edge, so you know exactly where the bumps should start.
- Make the coal bumps different sizes, some big and some small. A wiggly cloud looks much more like real lumps than a row of matching circles.
- Draw the face lightly in the middle of the leg part, with the eyes side by side and a small smile between them. Keep the smile small so it stays sweet.
