Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The big head
Near the top of your page, draw a big curved line like a rounded dome, starting low on the left and ending low on the right. Leave the bottom open for the neck.
Step 3: The tunic body
Start under the left side of the head and draw a line down that bulges out a little, then a flat line across the bottom. Draw the right side going back up toward the head. Leave the top open.
Step 4: Collar and shoes
Draw a curved line across the neck from one side to the other, then a small U shape under it for the collar. Draw two flat ovals at the bottom for the shoes.
Step 5: Arms
On the left side, draw a long skinny oval for the arm resting by the body. On the right, draw a short curved line that sweeps out and down from the shoulder.
Step 6: The lantern pole
Draw a long straight line going up on the right side. At the top, turn it to the right with a short flat line, then bend it a little bit down.
Step 7: The round lantern
Next to the pole, draw a barrel shape with a flat top and bottom. Add curved lines on both sides inside it, like the ribs of a paper lantern.
Step 8: The lantern tassel
Draw a short straight line down from the bottom of the lantern. Finish with a little teardrop shape at the end.
Step 9: Face and hand
Draw two round dots for eyes in the middle of the head, with a small curvy smile between them. Then finish the right arm with a little circle for the hand where it meets the pole.
Step 10: Buttons and legs
Down the middle of the tunic, draw three round dots in a row. Then add a short line from the bottom of the body to each shoe.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a kid with a Lunar New Year lantern
- Draw the pole with a ruler edge or the side of a book if you want it extra straight. Start at the hand and go up in one steady line.
- The lantern is the trickiest part. Make the top and bottom flat first, then curve the sides outward like a barrel.
- Space the three buttons evenly by marking two light dots at the top and bottom first, then putting the middle one halfway between.
