Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The crescent moon
In the bottom left, draw a big curve like the letter C that leans a little. Then draw a second curve inside it that meets the first at the two pointy tips to make a fat crescent moon.
Step 3: Stars and top line
On the right side, draw a star at the top right and two more stars lower down, one at the bottom left and one at the bottom right. Then draw a straight line from the top right star going left.
Step 4: Three box sides
Draw a straight line down from the top right star to the bottom right star. Then draw a line from the bottom right star across to the bottom left star, and a line going up from the bottom left star.
Step 5: Corner star and handle stars
Draw a star at the top left corner of the box, where the top and left lines meet. Then draw two small stars going up and to the left from it, each one a little higher than the last.
Step 6: The last star
At the very top left, draw one more star to finish the long handle. Make it about the same size as the others.
Step 7: The handle line
Draw a gently curved line from the top left star down through the two middle stars to the star at the corner of the box. Let it bend a little, like the handle of a spoon.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a constellation
- Draw one star first and look at it, then copy its size for the rest so they all match.
- Use a light dot where each star will go before you draw it, so the box and the handle line up.
- For the moon, draw the big outer curve first and then tuck the smaller curve inside it.

Constellation fun fact for kids
The Big Dipper is not a whole constellation. It is part of a bigger one called Ursa Major, the Great Bear, and the two stars on the outer edge of its bowl point toward the North Star.

What shapes do I need to draw a constellation?
You need five-point stars, straight lines, a curved line for the handle and curves for the moon. Start with the stars, then connect them.

Draw a light circle where each star goes and touch the five points to it. That keeps every star about the same size.
