How to Draw a Cowboy Hat (Easy Step by Step)
A cowboy hat is a fun drawing because it is mostly big, friendly curves. You build it from a tall crown with a dip on top, a wide smile-shaped brim, and a few curved lines for the band. A small badge on the front and a row of stitching dashes finish it off.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Crown with a dip
Start with the top of the hat. Draw a tall rounded shape with a little V dip in the middle of the top, so it has two soft bumps. Leave the bottom open and let the two sides run straight down.
Step 3: Wide brim curve
Draw a big smile-shaped curve below the crown. Start high on the left, swoop down and across the bottom, then sweep up on the right. Both ends flick upward.
Step 4: Brim top edges
On each side, draw a short curve that starts at the bottom of the crown and travels out to the brim curve. These lines make the brim look bent.
Step 5: Hat band lines
Draw three gently curved lines across the crown, one above the other, from the left side to the right side. They make a wide band with a thin stripe below it.
Step 6: Little badge
In the middle of the band, draw a small badge shape that looks like a tiny star or flower. Put a small circle in the center of it.
Step 7: Stitching dashes
Follow the curve of the brim and draw a row of short dashes, like a stitched seam. Start near the left end of the brim and keep going to the right end.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a cowboy hat
- Draw the crown first and keep it tall and a bit narrow. The brim looks much wider when the top is small.
- The band lines should sag a little in the middle, like a gentle smile, so the hat looks round instead of flat.
- For the dashes, go slowly and keep each one about the same length. Lightly mark where each dash starts before you draw it.

Cowboy hat fun fact for kids
John B. Stetson made a famous wide-brimmed hat called the "Boss of the Plains" in 1865. Its big brim helped shade the face from the sun and keep rain off the neck.
