How to Draw a Mitten (Easy Step by Step)

A mitten is a fun first winter drawing because it is built from a few simple shapes: a rounded arch, a small bump for the thumb, and a rounded rectangle for the cuff. The patterns, stripes, a zigzag and a snowflake, are just short straight lines that anyone can copy. Once you know the steps, you can make a whole pair.

How to draw a mitten step by step

How to Draw a Mitten · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: The big arch

Draw a tall, rounded arch like an upside-down U. Start low on the left, curve up and over the top, and come down the right side, which is a little longer than the left.

  2. Step 2: The thumb

On the left side, start where the arch ends and draw a small rounded bump that sticks out, like a heart tipped on its side. Curve it down and back in, then draw a short line straight down.

  3. Step 3: The cuff

Draw a wide rounded rectangle across the bottom of the mitten, like a soft pillow, to close it off. Its top edge touches the bottom of the mitten on both sides.

  4. Step 4: Cuff stripes

Inside the cuff, draw five short straight lines standing up like little fence posts. Try to space them evenly.

  5. Step 5: The zigzag

Above the cuff, draw a zigzag line going up and down like a row of tiny mountains. Keep each point about the same height.

  6. Step 6: The snowflake

Near the top of the mitten, draw a short sideways line. Then cross it with two slanted lines to make a star shape with six arms.

  7. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a mitten

  • Draw the big arch first and keep it tall and round. The thumb will look much easier once the main shape is there.
  • The thumb is the trickiest part. Think of a small rounded heart tipped on its side, and let its line meet the arch gently.
  • For the snowflake, draw the sideways line first, then cross it with two slanted lines in the middle so all six arms look even.

How to color your mitten drawing

Try red, blue, or purple for the mitten, with a white snowflake and a different color for the cuff. For a creative twist, draw a second mitten and make the patterns match, or give each one a different pattern.

Mitten fun fact for kids

A mitten keeps all four fingers together in one space, so they share warmth, which is why many people find mittens warmer than gloves.
