An advent calendar is a cozy little house with rows of tiny doors, one for each day of a holiday countdown. This drawing is built from rectangles, a triangle, and a star, so it is a great first project for young artists. Once you can draw one door, you can copy it again and again.

Step 1: Walls of the house
Draw a tall rectangle that is open at the top: a straight line down on the left, a straight line across the bottom, and a straight line up on the right. Keep the two sides the same height.
Step 2: The wavy roof
Draw a big triangle on top of the walls, a little wider than the house on each side. Make the bottom edge of the roof wavy, like frosting or snow, instead of straight.
Step 3: The star
At the very top of the roof, draw a small five-pointed star. Start at the top point and zigzag around until the star closes.
Step 4: Top row of doors
Inside the house, just under the roof, draw four small squares with rounded corners in a row. Keep them the same size with a little space between each one.
Step 5: Middle row of doors
Draw a second row of four rounded squares right below the first row. Line them up so each one sits neatly under a door above.
Step 6: Bottom row of doors
Add a third row of four rounded squares under the middle row. Now your calendar has twelve little doors.
Step 7: Knobs and a hook
Draw a small dot near the right side of each door for a doorknob. On the second door in the top row, also draw a little curvy hook shape inside the square.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing an advent calendar
- Draw the first door, then use it as your guide. Make every other door about the same size so the rows look tidy.
- Leave a small gap between the doors. If they touch, the grid looks crowded and is harder to color.
- For the wavy roof edge, draw a row of gentle bumps, like a sleepy caterpillar, going left to right in one smooth motion.

How to color your advent calendar drawing
Try a red roof, a green house, and doors in bright holiday colors, with a yellow star on top. Use a different color for the door with the hook so it stands out as the open one.
Advent calendar fun fact for kids
The first printed advent calendar is usually credited to Gerhard Lang, a German, in the early 1900s. Many advent calendars count down the days from December 1 to Christmas Eve.
