How to Draw a Pecan Pie: easy drawing guide for kids

How to Draw a Pecan Pie (Easy Step by Step)

A pecan pie is a great first dessert drawing because it is built from simple ovals and triangles. You start with a wide flat oval, cut out a pointy slice, and dot the top with nutty ovals. The slice sitting on its own at the bottom makes the picture feel like dessert is about to be served.

How to draw a pecan pie step by step

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: Crust rim and side

Draw a wide, flat oval with a gently wavy edge for the top of the pie. Then draw curved lines down from the left and right sides for the thick side of the pie, leaving a gap at the front.

  3. Step 3: Inner filling ring

Inside the crust, draw a curved line that follows the shape of the oval, leaving a little space between the two. Stop at each side of the gap at the front, so the ring stays open.

  4. Step 4: The missing slice

At the front, draw a pointy upside-down V that reaches up into the filling. Its two ends touch the crust on each side of the gap.

  5. Step 5: Pecan outlines

Draw five small ovals sitting on the filling, spread around the pie. Tuck one beside the cut, put two near the back and one on the right.

  6. Step 6: Pecan stripes

Inside each pecan oval, draw a short rounded stripe in the middle. This makes the pecans look nutty.

  7. Step 7: Slice outline

Below the pie, draw a tall pointy shape like a little house: two slanted lines meeting at the top, then short straight sides and a flat bottom.

  8. Step 8: Slice crust edge

Draw a wiggly wavy line straight across the slice, near the bottom where the pointy part meets the short sides. This is the crinkly crust edge.

  9. Step 9: Pecan on the slice

In the middle of the pointy part of the slice, draw a small oval pecan with a smaller oval inside it, just like the pecans on the pie.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a pecan pie

  • Draw the top of the pie as a wide, flat oval so it looks like you are seeing it from above and a little to the side.
  • The pointy cut-out is the trickiest part, so make the two sides of the V the same length and let both ends touch the crust.
  • Make the pecan ovals different sizes and turn them in different directions so they look scattered, not lined up.

How to color your pecan pie drawing

Try golden brown for the crust, deep caramel brown for the filling, and lighter tan for the pecans. Use the same colors on the little slice so it matches the pie.

Pecan pie fun fact for kids

The pecan tree is the official state tree of Texas, and pecans are one of the few nuts that grow on trees native to North America.

Questions about drawing a pecan pie

What shapes do I need to draw a pecan pie?

You need a big flat oval for the pie, a pointy V for the cut-out, and small ovals for the pecans. The slice is a pointy shape on top of a short box, and a wavy line makes its crust look crinkly.

How do I draw the slice that was cut out?

Draw a pointy upside-down V at the front of the pie that goes up into the filling. Then draw a small slice below the pie, with a wavy line across it for the crust.

How do I make my pecan pie look more real?

Wiggle the edge of the crust instead of drawing it smooth, and give each pecan a small stripe in the middle. Coloring the filling darker than the crust helps too.
