How to Draw a Volleyball (Easy Step by Step)

A volleyball is a great first sports drawing because it is mostly one big circle with a few curved lines inside. Three seams meet in the middle like the letter Y, and three shorter lines sit beside them. If you can draw a circle and a curve, you can draw this ball.

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The ball outline

Draw a big round circle for the ball. Take your time and let your hand go around in one smooth loop.

  3. Step 3: The center seam

Start at the top of the circle, a little right of the middle. Draw a long curve that bows a little to the left and ends in the middle of the ball.

  4. Step 4: The lower right seam

Begin where the center seam ends. Curve a line down and to the right until it touches the edge of the circle.

  5. Step 5: The lower left seam

From the same middle spot, curve a line down and to the left until it reaches the edge of the circle. Now three lines meet in the middle, like the letter Y.

  6. Step 6: The left stitch line

Near the left edge, draw a gently curved line that starts at the side and swoops up toward the center seam. Stop before you touch it.

  7. Step 7: The right stitch line

On the right side, draw a short curved line that starts near the top and bends down. It follows the shape of the center seam but stays apart from it.

  8. Step 8: The bottom stitch line

Below the middle, draw a curved line that bends down and to the right. Keep it between the two lower seams and don't let it touch them.

  9. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a volleyball

  • Draw the circle lightly first. If it comes out a little lopsided, a ball still looks like a ball.
  • The spot where the three seams meet is the trickiest part. Draw the first seam so it ends in the middle, then start the other two seams from that same spot.
  • Keep the three short lines from touching the long seams. The small gaps are what make the panels look real.

Volleyball fun fact for kids

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He first called the game mintonette, and he wanted something gentler than basketball.

Questions about drawing a volleyball

What shapes do I need to draw a volleyball?

You need one big circle and some curved lines. The three long seams are gentle curves that meet in the middle.

How do I make my volleyball look round?

Make the seams bend the same way the ball curves, bowing outward instead of going straight. Curved lines make a flat circle look like a ball.

How long does it take to draw a volleyball?

Most kids finish in about 10 minutes. Most of that time goes to the circle and to getting the seams to meet in the middle.
