  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The big penguin

Draw a tall bean shape for the big penguin, with a rounded top and sides that curve gently down to a narrower bottom. Add a tiny bump on each side about a third of the way down.

  3. Step 3: The scarf

Near the neck, draw two curved lines that go across the penguin, one above the other. Close the ends on each side with little curves to make a cozy scarf.

  4. Step 4: Face and scarf tag

Add two small dots for eyes and a tiny rounded triangle for the beak in between. Then draw a little rectangle hanging down from the scarf.

  5. Step 5: Flippers, tummy and feet

Draw a curved flipper like a bent banana on each side of the body. Add a big oval tummy in the middle, then two small rounded feet at the bottom.

  6. Step 6: The second body

On the right, draw the two long sides of another tall bean shape, curving in and meeting in a curve at the bottom. Leave the top open for now.

  7. Step 7: The woolly hat

Draw a rounded dome across the top of the open body, then a wide strip across the bottom of the dome for the folded brim. Finish with a small circle on top for the pom-pom.

  8. Step 8: Hat stripes and face

Draw two curved lines inside the dome for the hat stripes. Then add two dots for eyes, a small triangle beak, and a curved flipper on each side of the body.

  9. Step 9: Tummy and feet

Draw a big oval tummy in the middle of the body. Finish with two small rounded feet at the bottom.

  10. Step 10: The fluffy chick

Between the penguins, draw a small round shape with lots of little bumps all the way around. Add two dots for eyes, a tiny beak, a couple of curly feathers on top, and two small feet.

  11. Step 11: The ground

Draw a long, slightly wobbly line under all three penguins so they have something to stand on.

  12. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a penguin family

  • Draw the first tall body with a smooth, gentle curve. The second body should be about the same height so the two penguins look like a pair.
  • The chick's fluffy edge is the trickiest part. Draw lots of small bumps, like a cloud, and do not worry if they are not even.
  • Leave a gap between the two big penguins so the chick has room to stand in the middle.
