Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The round head
Draw a big circle near the top of your paper. On the left side, add a little hooked bump for the beak that curves out and back in.
Step 3: The belly
Starting just under the left side of the head, draw a long curve down and around like the bottom of an egg. Let it swing back up a little, then turn down and to the right to start the tail.
Step 4: Back and tail
Start at the right side of the head and curve out and down to make the back. Keep going down into a long, pointed tail, then draw a short line to close the tail tip.
Step 5: The wing
Inside the body, draw a big leaf shape with a pointy top on the left and a rounded bottom. It should sit on the right side of the body.
Step 6: The perch
Near the bottom, draw a long rectangle with rounded ends, like a fat sausage lying down. This is the branch the bird sits on.
Step 7: Feet and legs
Draw two short straight lines down from the belly to the perch. At the bottom of each, add tiny toes that rest on the perch.
Step 8: Eye and head feather
Add a dot for the eye on the head, and a smaller dot below it near the beak. Then draw one little wavy squiggle on top of the head for a fluffy feather.
Step 9: Wing feather marks
Inside the wing, draw two short wavy lines, one above the other. They look like ripples and show the feathers.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a parakeet
- Draw the head circle first and keep it light, so the beak bump has room on the left side.
- The tail is the trickiest part. Make it one long, narrow point, and let the back line flow right into it without stopping.
- Draw the wing as a leaf shape that stays inside the body, with a little space between it and the body outline.

How to color your parakeet drawing
Try bright green on the body and yellow on the head, with blue on the wing and tail. For a creative twist, give your parakeet a rainbow wing with a different color in each wavy feather mark.
Parakeet fun fact for kids
Parakeets can learn to copy sounds, and some pet parakeets learn to say words and short phrases. Wild budgerigars, the most common pet parakeets, come from Australia and live in big flocks.
