This little seal in a Santa hat is mostly circles and ovals, so it is a friendly first Christmas drawing. You will build it from a round head, a hill-shaped body, a hat with a fluffy band and pom-pom, two bean-shaped flippers and a little leaf tail. The smiley freckled face is the best part.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The round head
Draw a big U-shaped curve for the bottom of a round head, like a bowl. Leave the top open, because the hat will cover it later.
Step 3: The chubby body
Start under the left side of the head and curve down for the seal's side. Then draw a hill-shaped back from the right side of the head, sloping down to the right. Add two short flat lines along the bottom, one on the left and one on the right, with a gap in the middle.
Step 4: The hat band
Across the top of the head, draw a long rounded rectangle, like a squished sausage lying on its side. This is the fluffy fold at the bottom of the hat. Add a tiny tick at the right end.
Step 5: Hat top and pom-pom
Start at the left end of the band and draw a big curved arch up and over, bending down toward the right end of the band. Where the arch ends, draw a small circle for the pom-pom.
Step 6: Two flippers
Draw two little bean-shaped ovals along the bottom. One sits at the bottom left corner of the body, and one sits in the gap in the middle of the bottom line.
Step 7: The tail
At the right end of the bottom line, draw two small leaf shapes that meet at a point, like a tiny bow. This is the seal's tail.
Step 8: The happy face
Draw two round dots for eyes and a small oval nose between them, lower down. Under the nose, draw a little smile, then add a few tiny freckle dots on each cheek.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a Christmas seal
- Draw the head as a bowl shape and leave the top open, so the hat band can sit right on it without lines crossing.
- The hat band is the trickiest part. Draw a long rectangle first, then round off all four corners so it looks soft and fluffy.
- Keep the face small and low on the head. Put the eyes and nose close together and the cute look comes by itself.

Christmas seal fun fact for kids
Seals are great swimmers, and many of them can hold their breath for a long time while they dive for fish. Their flippers work like paddles in the water, and on land they wiggle forward on their bellies.
