How to Draw a Gemstone (Easy Step by Step)

A gemstone is a great drawing for beginners because it is made almost entirely of straight lines and triangles. You draw a flat top, a pointy bottom, and a few lines inside to make it look like it is catching the light. A four-point star and two tiny diamonds around it make it feel like a real treasure.

How to draw a gemstone step by step

How to Draw a Gemstone · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Top and side edges

Draw a short flat line near the top of the page. Then slant a line down and out from each end of it, so the three lines look like the top and sides of a wide trapezoid.

  2. Step 2: The middle belt

Draw a straight line across from the bottom of the left slanted line to the bottom of the right slanted line. This closes the top part of the gem into a trapezoid.

  3. Step 3: Bottom point

From each end of the belt, draw a long line that slants down toward the middle. Make both lines meet at a point at the bottom, like an upside-down triangle.

  4. Step 4: Long center lines

Start at two spots on the belt, near the middle. Draw two lines that lean toward each other and almost reach the bottom point.

  5. Step 5: Top facets

Draw a zigzag between the top edge and the belt. Go down to the belt, up to the top edge, and repeat, like a row of little mountains upside down.

  6. Step 6: Big sparkle

In the upper left corner, draw a small four-point star. It has four pointed arms with a tiny diamond hole in the middle.

  7. Step 7: Small sparkles

Add two tiny diamond shapes on the right side, one near the top and one lower down. Make them much smaller than the star.

  8. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a gemstone

  • Use a ruler or the edge of a card for the belt line. It is the line everything else connects to, so a level belt makes the whole gem look neat.
  • Make the two long center lines lean toward each other but stop just short of the bottom point. Drawing them lightly first lets you fix them if they cross.
  • Draw the sparkles last and keep them small. Make the star's four arms pointy, and keep the two little diamonds much smaller than the star.

Try light blue, pink, or purple, and color each triangle a slightly different shade so the gem looks shiny. For a creative twist, make a rainbow gem with a different color in every section.

Gemstone fun fact for kids

Diamonds are the hardest natural material on Earth. A diamond can scratch almost anything, but only another diamond can scratch a diamond.

Questions about drawing a gemstone

What shapes do I need to draw a gemstone?

You need a wide trapezoid for the top and a triangle for the bottom. The lines inside make smaller triangles, and the sparkles are a four-point star and two tiny diamonds.

How do I make my gemstone look shiny?

Leave a few triangles white and color the others in light and dark shades of the same color. Add the star and tiny diamonds nearby to make it look like it is glittering.

How do I draw the four-point star sparkle?

Draw four short pointed arms, one up, one down, one left, and one right, so they meet around a small diamond hole in the middle. This makes the sharp star shape.
