Step 1: Top and front lines
Draw two straight lines side by side across the page, one above the other, with a gap between them. At the right end, draw a line down from the top line, curving a little at the corner, to make the right side of the box.
Step 2: The round lid
Draw a big dome like a rainbow that starts on the left side of the box and curves up and over to the right. Add the left side of the box going down, and a short curl inside the dome near the right end.
Step 3: The treasure pile
Inside the lid, draw a bumpy line of puffy hills, like a cloud, to show the heap of treasure.
Step 4: Two coins
Draw one small round coin on the left and another round coin on the right, so they sit on the top line of the box and poke up into the pile.
Step 5: The gem
Draw a small diamond shape, tilted like a kite, in the middle of the pile. Add a tiny tip at the top where it peeks out.
Step 6: The keyhole slot
In the middle of the box, below the wide line, draw one short straight line standing up. This will be the slot of the keyhole.
Step 7: Two side straps
Draw two straight lines going down from the wide line, one on the left and one on the right. Leave a wide space between them in the middle.
Step 8: Bottom and lock
Draw a gently curved line along the bottom of the box from the left side to the right side. Then draw a small square with rounded corners around the keyhole slot to make the lock.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a treasure chest
- Draw the dome lid in one smooth swoop and let your hand move from the shoulder, not just the fingers.
- Make the puffy treasure line with small bumps, like drawing a row of clouds, and keep it inside the lid.
- Draw the two straps straight down from the wide line, and keep them the same distance from each side so they look balanced.

Try brown wood, yellow coins, and a bright blue or green gem. Color the lock gray or gold. For a twist, color the pile with rainbow gems instead of gold.

Treasure Island, a pirate adventure book by Robert Louis Stevenson, was published in 1883. Many ideas we have about pirates and buried treasure come from that story.
Questions about drawing a treasure chest
What shapes do I need to draw a treasure chest?
You need a box made of straight lines, a big dome for the lid, and a bumpy cloud line for the pile. Two small circles make the coins, a diamond makes the gem, and a small rounded square makes the lock.
How do I make my treasure chest look full?
Draw a bumpy cloud line inside the lid and let the coins and gem sit in the pile. Overlapping shapes make the pile look deep.
How can I make the chest look old and magical?
Add a few small wood plank lines and some sparkles above the gem. Coloring the wood a darker brown helps it look old.
