A baby seahorse is a cute thing to draw because it is made of soft curves instead of hard corners. You will draw a head with a short snout, a long curving body, a bumpy back, a round eye, and a spiral for the curly tail. It is a great first drawing for building smooth, flowing lines.

How to draw a baby seahorse step by step

How to Draw a Baby Seahorse · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Head and snout

Start at the top of the head and draw a curved line that goes down the front of the face. Let it bend out into a short, rounded snout that points left, then tuck it back in underneath.

  2. Step 2: Neck and belly

From under the snout, draw a long, smooth curve that sweeps down and in for the neck. Then let it curve out into a round tummy and end with a tiny hook at the bottom.

  3. Step 3: Bumpy back

Start at the top of the head and draw a wavy line down the back, like a row of soft little hills. Stop near the middle of the body.

  4. Step 4: Back bump and curly tail

Under the bumpy back, draw a small rounded bump that curves in on the right side. Then let the line slide down and curl around into a spiral tail that meets the end of the tummy curve.

  5. Step 5: Eye and tiny crest

Draw a small round eye in the middle of the head and leave a tiny white spot inside it for a sparkle. Add a very short little line at the top of the head, near the front.

  6. Step 6: Two fins

Next to the seahorse, draw two leaf shapes that overlap, a bigger one and a smaller one. Make the smaller one sit in front of the big one.

  7. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a baby seahorse

  • The long curve for the neck and tummy is the trickiest part. Draw it slowly in one smooth stroke, and let your hand swing in and then out like a gentle wave.
  • For the curly tail, curl the line inward in a spiral and make each loop smaller than the last. Stop before the line closes up so the curl stays open and neat.
  • Keep the back bumps round and a little different in size. Wobbly, uneven hills make the seahorse look more alive than bumps that are all the same.

Seahorse dads carry the babies. The female puts her eggs into a pouch on the male's belly, and he looks after them until the tiny seahorses are born.

Questions about drawing a baby seahorse

What shapes do I need to draw a baby seahorse?

You need a curved head with a short snout, a long curve for the neck and tummy, a wavy line for the back, a round eye, a spiral for the tail, and two leaf shapes for the fins.

How do I make my seahorse look cuter?

Keep the snout short and add a little white sparkle in the eye. Round, chubby curves on the tummy and back make it look like a baby.

How do I draw the curly tail?

Start from the end of the tummy curve, then keep curling the line inward in a spiral, like a snail shell. Go slowly and make each loop smaller than the last.
