How to Draw a Kangaroo (Easy Step by Step)
A kangaroo is a friendly animal to draw because it is made from simple shapes: an oval head, long ears, curvy lines, and one big U. The best part is the baby joey peeking out of the pouch. Once you can draw this kangaroo, you can make a whole hopping family.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The head
Draw a rounded oval for the head, then stretch the right side out into a gentle pointed snout. Join the lines to close the shape.
Step 3: Back and tummy
Starting just under the head on the left, draw a long curve down the back that ends in a pointed back leg. On the right, draw a big round tummy curve that sweeps down toward the ground.
Step 4: The two ears
On top of the head, draw two tall skinny ovals that lean a little apart, like long leaves. Let the bottoms touch the head.
Step 5: Leg and big foot
Start at the pointed tip of the leg and draw a long slanted line toward the right for the bottom of the leg. Then step down into a long, flat foot with a rounded toe, and add a small matching toe where the tummy curve meets the ground.
Step 6: Eye and little arm
Add a small round dot for the eye near the middle of the head. Then draw a little sideways hook shape, like a curly C, on the chest for the arm.
Step 7: The pouch
On the tummy, draw a big U shape like a smile, with both ends pointing up. This is the pouch where a baby can ride.
Step 8: Baby joey
Inside the pouch, draw a small circle for the baby's face with two tiny bumps on top for ears. Add two little dots for the eyes.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a kangaroo
- Start with the head as a light oval, then pull one side out into a snout so it comes out round and smooth.
- The long back foot is the trickiest part. Take it slowly: slant the line from the leg tip, then step down into the flat foot and the rounded toe.
- Keep the pouch U wide and the joey small, so the baby fits inside without touching the pouch line.

How to color your kangaroo drawing
Try warm sandy brown or reddish tan for the kangaroo, with a lighter cream color on the tummy and the pouch. Color the joey a little lighter than its mom so it stands out.
Kangaroo fun fact for kids
A baby kangaroo is called a joey, and it is only about the size of a jellybean when it is born. It climbs into its mother's pouch and stays there for months while it grows.
