  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: Head and chest

Start at the top left of the head and draw a big, soft curve over the top and down the right side. Tuck in a little at the chest, then make a small round bump for the front foot and end with a short line going left.

  3. Step 3: Back and belly

Start on the left, near the top of the body, and curve down and around to make a big, low hill like a loaf of bread. Then run a nearly flat line along the bottom to the right, with a small bump at the end where it meets the front foot.

  4. Step 4: Ear and shoulder

On the left side of the head, draw a small round bump for an ear. Then draw a gentle curve from the ear down to the top of the back to join the body.

  5. Step 5: The other ear

On top of the head, draw a small upside-down U for the second ear. Let both ends touch the top of the head.

  6. Step 6: Front leg line

Near the bottom, draw a short line going up from the belly line, next to the foot bump. It shows where the front leg tucks in.

  7. Step 7: Sleepy face

Draw two short dashes for the sleepy eyes, one on each side of the face. Then add two small dots for the nostrils, and a short line down with a little tick at the bottom for the mouth.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a capybara swimming

  • Make the head and body big and smooth. Draw slowly and let your hand curve instead of stopping and starting.
  • The face is the trickiest part. Keep the eyes as short dashes, and place the nose and mouth low and close together so it looks calm.
  • Draw the ears small and round. If they come out too big, the capybara will look more like a bear, so keep them tiny.
