How to draw a camera step by step

  1. Step 1: The camera body

Draw a big rectangle with soft, rounded corners. Make it wider than it is tall, like a loaf of bread lying down.

  2. Step 2: The shutter button

On the top edge, near the right side, draw a small rounded box that sits on the body like a little hat. Its sides start at the top line of the camera.

  3. Step 3: The big lens

In the middle of the camera, draw a big circle. Make it more than half as tall as the body so it looks like a round window.

  4. Step 4: Rings inside the lens

Draw a smaller circle inside the big one, then a tiny circle in the very center. Keep them all centered, like ripples in a pond.

  5. Step 5: The flash

In the top left corner of the body, draw a small rounded rectangle, a bit like a pill. This is where the light pops out.

  6. Step 6: Rosy cheeks

Draw one small filled dot near the bottom left corner and one near the bottom right corner. Try to place them at the same height.

  7. Step 7: A happy smile

Between the two cheeks, below the lens, draw a short curved line like a little bowl. Now your camera is smiling.

  8. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a camera

  • The three lens circles are the trickiest part. Start with the big one, then put the smaller ones inside, keeping the same center spot so they look like a target.
  • Draw the camera body lightly first. Make the corners round by curving your pencil early instead of turning sharply.
  • Place the two cheek dots at the same height and the same distance from the sides of the camera, so the face looks balanced.

How to color your camera drawing

Try a classic black or silver body with a blue lens, or go bright with a mint green camera and a pink flash. For a creative twist, color each ring of the lens a different shade of blue.

Camera fun fact for kids

The word camera comes from a Latin phrase meaning "dark room." The earliest cameras were dark rooms with a tiny hole in one wall, which let a picture of the outside shine upside down on the opposite wall.

Questions about drawing a camera

What shapes do I need to draw a camera?

You need a rounded rectangle for the body, a small rounded box for the shutter button, a small pill shape for the flash, and three circles for the lens. A curved line and two dots finish the face.

How do I draw circles that fit inside each other?

Draw the biggest circle first, then find the center and draw a smaller one around that same spot. Repeat with a tiny one in the middle.

How do I make my camera look cuter?

Add the smile and the round cheek dots, and make the corners of the body extra round. A large lens in the middle also makes it look like a big friendly eye.
