  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: Two big balloons

Draw two big egg shapes, one on the left and one on the right, with a little gap between them. Make each one a bit narrower at the bottom, with a tiny point at the very bottom.

  3. Step 3: The top balloon

Draw a smaller egg shape in the gap between the big balloons, a bit higher than they are. Give it a tiny point at the bottom, too.

  4. Step 4: Three little knots

At the bottom point of each balloon, draw a tiny rounded triangle, like a small hat. This is where the string will tie on.

  5. Step 5: The wiggly strings

From each knot, draw a long wiggly line going down. The side strings curve in toward the middle, and the middle string wiggles straight down. Stop all three near the bottom of your page, close together.

  6. Step 6: The bow and tails

Where the strings come together, draw a small knot with a loop on each side, like a sideways number 8. Then add two short lines that angle down and outward for the ribbon tails.

  7. Step 7: Shiny highlights

Inside each balloon near the upper left, draw a short curved line, like a little arch. It makes the balloons look shiny and round.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing balloons

  • Draw the two big balloons first, then fit the top balloon in the gap between them. It is easier to leave a gap than to squeeze one in later.
  • The wavy strings are the trickiest part. Try making slow, relaxed curves instead of sharp zigzags, and keep your hand moving smoothly.
  • For the bow, draw the little knot and the two loops, then add the two tails. The loops do not have to match exactly.

How to color your balloons drawing

Try a different bright color for each balloon, such as red, yellow, and blue, and make the bow a color that shows up against them. For a creative twist, add polka dots or stripes to the balloons, or draw a birthday banner behind them.

Balloons fun fact for kids

Helium is lighter than air, so a balloon filled with helium floats up. That is why you need to hold the string, or your balloon would drift all the way to the ceiling.

How do I make my balloons look shiny?

Add a short curved line near the upper left inside each balloon. This little highlight makes the balloon look round and glossy.

How do I draw a balloon string that looks wavy?

Draw a long, gentle wiggle instead of a straight line. Go slowly, and let the line bend a little at a time.
