Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: Head outline
Draw a big rounded head shape, a little wider than it is tall, starting on the left and ending on the right. Leave a small gap at the bottom where the neck and shirt will meet.
Step 3: The cap band
Draw a long, thin, flat oval across the upper part of the head, reaching both sides. This is the brim of the cap, and the part of the head above it is the top of the cap.
Step 4: Eyes and smile
Draw two little dots for eyes, side by side below the cap. Add a small curved smile between them and a bit lower.
Step 5: Shirt and shorts
Under the head, draw one tall box with slightly rounded corners for the shirt and shorts. Make the bottom edge a little wider, with a small upside-down V notch in the middle.
Step 6: Arms and hand
On the right side of the shirt, draw two curved lines that go up and out like a raised arm, and finish with a small circle for the hand. On the left side, draw a long, skinny oval hugging the shirt for the other arm.
Step 7: Belt and legs
Draw a straight line across the shirt, just above the shorts, for a belt. Under the shorts, draw three short little lines hanging down to start the legs.
Step 8: The shoes
At the bottom of the legs, draw two wide, flat ovals for shoes. Let the two shoes sit side by side and gently touch.
Step 9: Balloon and string
Next to the hand, draw a big circle for the balloon with a tiny pinched point at the bottom. From that point, draw a wiggly line down toward the hand for the string.
Step 10: Star and shine
Inside the balloon, draw a small five-pointed star. Then add a short curved line near the top left to make the balloon look shiny.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a kid with a balloon
- Draw the head and leave a small gap at the bottom. That way the shirt tucks in neatly under the chin.
- The raised arm is the trickiest part. Draw two curved lines that start at the shirt and end at the hand circle, and keep them close together like a skinny sleeve.
- Draw the balloon string as a gentle wave that ends near the hand. If it floats far from the hand, the kid will not look like they are holding on.

Kid with a balloon fun fact for kids
Helium balloons float because helium gas is lighter than the air around us. The heavier air pushes the lighter balloon upward.
