Step 1: The left hill
Start near the left side of your paper and draw a long, gentle curve that rises like a soft bump, then slides down in a nearly straight slope toward the middle.
Step 2: The right hill
Start where the left hill ends and draw a line with a tiny bump, then curve it up and to the right like a big rolling hump. Let it flatten and drift off toward the right edge.
Step 3: The setting sun
On top of the right hill, draw a half circle like a sun peeking over the hilltop. Let both ends of the half circle touch the hill line.
Step 4: Sun rays
Draw short little dashes in a fan around the half circle, like tiny sticks. Keep a small gap between each dash and the sun.
Step 5: The left river bank
Start where the two hills meet and draw a wiggly S-shaped line that curves down toward the bottom of the page.
Step 6: The right river bank
Start just to the right of where your first wiggly line began and draw a second S-shaped line that follows the same curves. Leave a space between the two lines so the river can flow between them.
Step 7: The first tree
To the left of the river, draw a small teardrop shape with the point at the top. This is a little tree.
Step 8: The second tree
To the right of the river, higher up on the page, draw another teardrop with the point at the top. Make it a little smaller than the first so it looks farther away.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a valley
- Draw each hill with one smooth, slow stroke instead of lots of small ones, so the curves look relaxed.
- The two river lines are the trickiest part. Make the second S-curve follow the first, and keep the gap about the same all the way down.
- Draw the sun rays as short, separate dashes and space them out evenly, like the numbers around a clock.

How to color your valley drawing
Try soft greens for the hills, blue for the river, and yellow and orange for the sun. Color the trees green too, or give them autumn shades.
Valley fun fact for kids
Many valleys are carved by rivers, which slowly wear away rock and soil over thousands of years.
Questions about drawing a valley
What shapes do I need to draw a valley?
You need long curved lines for the hills, a half circle for the sun, and two wavy S-shaped lines for the river. The trees are simple teardrops.
How do I make the river look like it is flowing?
Draw the two river lines with matching curves and keep the space between them even. The wiggles make the river look like it is winding down the page.
How can I make my valley look farther away?
Draw the second tree smaller than the first and place it higher on the page. Things that are smaller and higher up look farther away.
