Step 1: The wavy outer edge
Draw a big square with wobbly, gently wavy sides that fills most of the page. Make it look like the soft edge of a blanket.
Step 2: The inner border
Draw a second wavy square inside the first one, leaving a small even gap all the way around. This makes the quilt's frame.
Step 3: The grid lines
Draw three straight lines from top to bottom, evenly spaced, inside the inner border. Then draw three lines from side to side so the quilt is split into 16 squares.
Step 4: Corner hearts
Draw a heart in the top-left square, the top-right square, and the bottom-right square. Start with two little bumps at the top and curve down to a point at the bottom.
Step 5: Two more hearts
Draw a heart in the third square of the second row, and another in the first square of the third row. Give each one two bumpy tops and a pointy bottom.
Step 6: Five-point stars
Draw a star in the second square of the top row, the first square of the second row, the last square of the third row, and the third square of the bottom row. Start with a point at the top, then zigzag down and around to finish all five points.
Step 7: Sparkle stars
Draw a four-pointed sparkle star in the third square of the top row, the third square of the third row, and the second square of the bottom row. Make points at the top, bottom, left, and right, with curved sides that pinch in between.
Step 8: Little dots
Add a few tiny dots in the second square of the third row, like little stitches or sprinkles. Keep them small and spread out.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a quilt
- Draw the grid lines with a ruler or the edge of a book so the squares stay even. Make the lines light first, then darken them once they look right.
- Hearts are the trickiest part. Draw two round bumps side by side at the top, then curve each one down and meet at a point at the bottom.
- Pencil a tiny plus sign in the middle of a square before you draw a star. It helps you center the star so it does not touch the grid lines.

The word quilt comes from the Latin word culcita, which meant a stuffed mattress or cushion.
