Step 1: Body and neck outline
Draw a tall guitar-like shape. Start with a long, narrow neck going down, then curve out into a small upper bout, pinch in at the waist, and swing out into a big round bottom. The two short curved lines inside the bottom are the little side notches.
Step 2: Scroll and pegs
At the very top of the neck, draw a small circle with a dot inside for the scroll. Then add two short lines sticking out on the left side and two on the right for the tuning pegs.
Step 3: The four strings
Draw four long straight lines side by side down the middle of the neck, running from partway down the neck to the lower body. Keep them close together like railroad tracks.
Step 4: Bridge and tailpiece
Near the bottom of the strings, draw a short curved line like a gentle frown for the bridge. Below it, draw a small shield shape that is wide on top and pointy at the bottom.
Step 5: The bow stick
Next to the violin, start at a point near the top and draw a long curved line going down. Then draw a nearly straight line from the same point so the two lines make a long, thin, leaf-like shape.
Step 6: The bow handle
At the bottom of the bow, draw a small rounded rectangle across the two lines to make the handle you hold.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a violin
- The body is the trickiest part. Start with the narrow neck, then curve out to the upper bulge, pinch in at the waist, and swing out to a big round bottom.
- Draw the four strings slowly so they stay straight and the same distance apart. They should all point the same way, down the middle of the neck.
- Draw the bow last and leave a gap between it and the violin. Start at the pointy tip and curve the first line, then the second line will be easy to match.

How to color your violin drawing
Try a warm reddish brown for the body and neck, with black for the strings, pegs, and the little tailpiece. For a creative twist, give the violin a rainbow body or add musical notes floating around it.
Violin fun fact for kids
A violin has four strings, and the bow that plays it is traditionally strung with horsehair. Rubbing the hair with a sticky tree resin called rosin helps it grip the strings to make sound.
Questions about drawing a violin
What shapes do I need to draw a violin?
You need a long narrow neck joined to a curvy body with a pinched waist, and a small circle for the scroll on top. Straight lines make the strings, and a long skinny leaf shape with a small rectangle makes the bow.
How do I make my violin look smooth and curvy?
Draw slowly and let your pencil flow in soft curves for the waist and the round bottom. Erase any extra marks once the outline looks right.
Why is the bow drawn next to the violin?
The bow is a separate tool that you pull across the strings to play. Drawing it beside the violin shows both pieces.
