Santa Claus is a great first drawing because he is built from big, friendly shapes. His face is a rounded oval, his hat is a dome, and his belt buckle is a rounded square. You will also draw a few small circles for the pom-pom and the mittens.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Sides of the face
Draw two long curved lines that bulge out a little, like the sides of a rounded face. Leave the top and bottom open. The lines should be about as far apart as a big egg is wide.
Step 3: The fluffy hat band
Across the top of the two side lines, draw a long rounded rectangle, like a fat sausage lying on its side. Make it a little wider than the face on both sides. Add a tiny wiggly line sticking up from its right end.
Step 4: The hat and pom-pom
On top of the band, draw a big curved dome for the hat. Then add a small circle at the right end of the dome for the pom-pom.
Step 5: The beard edge
Across the bottom of the face, draw a wavy line with a few soft bumps, like little clouds. This is the fluffy edge of Santa's beard, and it closes the bottom of the face.
Step 6: The body
Under the beard, draw a rounded shape like a bell for Santa's coat. Start at the beard on each side, curve out and down, and finish with a flat bottom line.
Step 7: The belt and buckle
Draw two straight lines across the middle of the coat for the belt. In the center, draw a rounded square for the buckle, with a smaller square inside it.
Step 8: The arm and mittens
On the left, draw a small circle at the edge of the coat for a mitten. On the right, draw a long curved arm that bends up from the coat, and finish it with a small circle for the waving hand.
Step 9: The eyes and nose
Draw two small dots for eyes, one on each side of the face. Between them and a little lower, draw a small upside-down U for the nose.
Step 10: The mustache and smile
Under the nose, draw a wide mustache that looks like two puffy ovals joined in the middle with a little dip. Finish with a tiny curved smile just below it.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing Santa Claus
- Start with the two side lines of the face and keep them big. Everything else, from the hat to the beard, fits around them.
- The fluffy hat band is the trickiest part. Make it a wide rounded rectangle that sticks out a little past the face on both sides.
- Draw the mustache as two puffy ovals that meet in the middle. If one side looks bigger, add a little bump to the other side until they match.
