A steering wheel is a great first drawing because it is mostly circles and curved shapes. You start with one big round rim, add a small round hub in the middle, and then fill in three spokes that connect them. Once the shapes are in place, it looks just like the wheel in a real car.

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The outer rim

Draw a big circle in the middle of your page. Make it nice and round, and leave a little space around the edge so there is room for the spokes inside.

  3. Step 3: The center hub

In the middle of the big circle, draw the bottom of a small circle, like a letter U. Stop with two short lines curving up on each side, and leave the top open for now.

  4. Step 4: The top spoke

Draw a flat line going left from the top of the hub, and another going right, both slanting down just a little. Then curve a big rainbow shape over the top to join the two ends.

  5. Step 5: The lower left spoke

Start near the hub and draw a short line going out to the left. Then draw a curve that follows the rim down, and bring a slanted line back up to the hub to close the shape.

  6. Step 6: The lower right spoke

Do the same on the other side. Draw a short line going right from the hub, curve it along the rim, and slant a line back up to the hub so both lower spokes match.

  7. Step 7: The shiny glint

Inside the hub, near the top right, draw a short curved line like a tiny smile on its side. It makes the center look round and shiny.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a steering wheel

  • Draw the outer circle lightly first. If it comes out wobbly, turn the paper as you draw and go around slowly.
  • Draw the small hub in the very center so all three spokes can meet it evenly.
  • Make the two lower spokes look like a matching pair. Draw the left one, then copy its size and slant on the right.

Steering wheel fun fact for kids

Early cars did not have steering wheels. Many were steered with a tiller, a lever like the handle on a small boat, before round steering wheels took over.

Questions about drawing a steering wheel

What shapes do I need to draw a steering wheel?

You need one big circle for the rim, a small round hub in the middle, and three spoke shapes. The top spoke looks like a rainbow and the two lower ones look like slices.

How do I make my steering wheel look round?

Draw it lightly first and go around in one smooth motion. You can also trace around a plate or lid for the rim, then draw the hub by hand.

How do I make my steering wheel look shiny?

Add a small curved line near the top right of the center hub, like a reflection. Leaving a little white space there when you color helps it shine.
