Step 1: Forehead stripe and cheeks
Draw two long lines side by side going down, close together, for the stripe on the forehead. At the bottom, curve each line outward and then down, so the two lines look like a skinny vase.
Step 2: Head top and floppy ears
Draw a curved line across the top of the head, over the stripe. Then draw a big floppy ear on each side, curving out and down like a teardrop and ending near the cheek.
Step 3: Chin
Draw a wavy line across the bottom of the face, connecting one cheek to the other. Make two soft bumps for the chin and lower lip.
Step 4: Eyes, nose and mouth
Add two small round dots for the eyes, one on each side of the stripe. Draw a little rounded nose in the middle of the muzzle, and a small upside-down V below it for the mouth.
Step 5: The big body
Start under each cheek and draw a long curved line that bows out wide and then comes back in toward the bottom. The two lines make a big arch, like a tall egg with the top and bottom left open.
Step 6: Collar and barrel
Draw a curved line across the neck for the collar. Hang a small rounded box underneath it and add a few short lines across it for the stripes, like a little barrel.
Step 7: The front legs
Draw a straight line down on each side of the barrel for the front legs. Add two short lines close together in the middle, and a small curve at the bottom of each line.
Step 8: Paws and toes
At the bottom of the legs, draw short curves along the ground to make two round paws. Add a few little lines on each paw for the toes.
Step 9: Back feet
Draw a small loop, like a flat oval, poking out at each side near the bottom of the body. These are the back feet peeking out.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a St. Bernard
- Draw the two ears the same size, and check that they hang down to about the same spot on each side.
- Start the body lines right under the cheeks and let them curve out wide, so the dog looks big and cozy.
- Keep the legs straight and close together in the middle, so the dog looks like it is sitting up.

St. Bernard fun fact for kids
St. Bernards are named after the Great St. Bernard Pass in the Swiss Alps, where monks at a hospice kept big dogs that helped find travelers lost in the snow.
Questions about drawing a St. Bernard
What shapes do I need to draw a St. Bernard?
You need two long lines for the forehead stripe, two teardrops for the ears, and a big curved arch for the body. Add a few straight lines for the legs and small loops for the feet.
How do I make my St. Bernard look cuter?
Draw the eyes as small round dots a little far apart and make the ears extra floppy. A small round nose and a little curved mouth make the face look friendly.
Why does the St. Bernard have a barrel?
Story pictures often show these dogs with a small barrel at the neck for rescue trips in the snow. It is a fun detail to add and a nice way to practice rounded boxes.
