How to Draw a Satellite (Easy Step by Step)

A satellite is a fun thing to draw because it is built from simple shapes you already know: squares, rectangles, circles and a few straight lines. This one has a friendly face, a little dish on top, and a ringed planet and two stars floating nearby. Nothing is tricky, so it is a great first space drawing.

How to draw a satellite step by step

How to Draw a Satellite · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The body

Draw a rounded square in the middle of your paper. This is the satellite's body, so make it a little wider than it is tall.

  3. Step 3: Two solar panels

Draw a wide rectangle on each side of the body, with a small gap between each one and the body. Make them the same size so your satellite looks balanced.

  4. Step 4: Panel windows

Draw one line across the middle of each panel and keep it going a little past the panel toward the body. Then add two up and down lines inside each panel to make six little windows.

  5. Step 5: Face and antenna

Draw two round dots for eyes and a small curved smile on the body. Then draw a short straight line going up from the top of the body, with a short crossbar line across it.

  6. Step 6: The dish

Draw a flat oval across the top of the antenna line. Then draw a curved bowl shape under the oval, like a little cup, to make a satellite dish.

  7. Step 7: The diamond star

In the upper left corner, draw a small diamond with four corners. Make it small and keep the corners rounded.

  8. Step 8: The little star

In the upper right, draw a small dot for a faraway star.

  9. Step 9: The planet

In the bottom right corner, draw a circle for a planet. Leave a tiny gap where you start and stop, since the ring will cross it next.

  10. Step 10: The planet ring

Draw a long, tilted oval that goes around the middle of the planet and sticks out on both sides. Let the ring pass in front of the bottom of the planet.

  11. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a satellite

  • Draw the two solar panels the same size by lining up their top and bottom edges with the body. A ruler or the edge of a book can help.
  • Make the line across the panels first, then the up and down lines. This keeps all six windows about even.
  • Draw the antenna line straight up from the middle of the body, then put the dish across the top of it.
  • For the planet, leave a tiny gap in the circle. Then draw the ring so it crosses in front of the bottom of the planet.

How to color your satellite drawing

Try silver or light gray for the body and deep blue for the solar panels, with a yellow glow on the stars. For a creative twist, color the planet in rainbow stripes or give your satellite bright pink cheeks.

Satellite fun fact for kids

The first artificial satellite was Sputnik 1, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. It was a metal ball about the size of a beach ball, and it beeped as it circled the Earth.

Questions about drawing a satellite

What shapes do I need to draw a satellite?

You need a rounded square for the body, two rectangles for the solar panels, and a few straight lines. An oval and a curved bowl make the dish on top.

How do I make my satellite look cuter?

Give it two round eyes and a small smile on the body. Placing the eyes wide apart and the smile small and low makes it look extra friendly.

How do I draw a planet with a ring?

Draw a circle first, then a long tilted oval around its middle. Let the ring cross in front of the bottom of the planet so it looks like it wraps around.
