This dancing kid is made from just a few friendly shapes: a big rounded head, a triangle for the dress, and long ovals for the arms. The little curved lines next to the waving hand make the drawing look like it is really moving. It is a great first drawing for showing action with simple lines.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The big round head
Draw a big rounded shape for the head, a little like a ball with a slightly flat top and flat sides. Make it about as wide as it is tall.
Step 3: The headband
Draw a curved line across the top of the head, from one side of the head to the other. It should bend up in the middle like a rainbow.
Step 4: The ponytail
On the left side of the head, start near the headband and draw a big curve out and down to a point. Then curve back up to the side of the head to close it, like a leaf.
Step 5: Eyes, smile and neck
Add two round dots for eyes, with a wide space between them. Draw a small curved smile below them, then two short lines going down from the chin for the neck.
Step 6: Collar, dress and shoe
Draw a flat bar across the bottom of the neck. Then draw two slanted lines going out from each end, and connect them at the bottom with a long, gently curved line to make a triangle-shaped dress. Add a small curved shoe peeking out at the bottom right corner.
Step 7: Arms and hands
Draw a long, skinny oval on each side of the dress, one pointing out low on the left and one waving up high on the right. Add a small circle at the end of each oval for a hand.
Step 8: The second shoe
Under the hem of the dress, on the left side, draw a small oval for the other shoe. Tuck the top of the oval up under the dress so the foot looks like it is stepping.
Step 9: Dress stripes
Draw two short curved lines across the skirt, one on the left and one on the right. Leave a little gap in the middle.
Step 10: Dancing motion lines
Next to the waving hand, draw two curved lines, a short one and a longer one beside it. They show how fast the hand is swinging.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a kid dancing
- Draw the head big first, then fit the headband across it and the ponytail beside it. This keeps everything the right size.
- The arms are the trickiest part. Draw each one as a long, skinny oval, then add the small circle hand at the end.
- Draw the two motion lines last, and make the outer one a little longer than the inner one. This makes the wave look like it is spreading out.
