How to Draw a Grasshopper (Easy Step by Step)
A grasshopper is a fun first bug to draw because it is built from a few simple pieces: a round head, a long curved body, and tall bent legs. The big back leg makes a tall arch that gives it a ready-to-jump look. Two long antennae on top finish the bug.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The round head
Draw a circle on the left side of your paper for the grasshopper's head. It does not have to be perfect, a little wobbly is just right.
Step 3: Eye, body and back
Draw a small dot inside the head for the eye. Then draw a long curve from the head up to a tall pointed hump, and a second curve along the bottom that joins the hump. Last, draw one long curve from the hump down to the right, and a short curve inside the hump.
Step 4: The back leg
Draw a second long curved line right next to the long curve on the right, from the hump down toward the ground. The two lines make one tall, skinny back leg.
Step 5: The front legs
Under the belly, draw two pairs of slanted lines going down. Each pair is one thin leg, and each ends with a small flat shoe shape at the bottom.
Step 6: Ankles and back foot
Draw a short line across each front leg, just above the shoe. Then draw a flat, rounded shoe shape at the bottom of the big back leg.
Step 7: The antennae
Draw two long, thin curved lines that start at the top of the head and reach up and out, like two bendy whiskers.
Step 8: The wing line
Draw one long, gently curved line inside the body, from near the head toward the hump. It shows the folded wing.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a grasshopper
- Draw the head circle first and leave room on the right, so the long body has space to stretch out.
- The back leg is the trickiest part. Draw the second line close to the first and curve it the same way so they look like one leg.
- Keep the front legs about the same length so your grasshopper stands steady on the ground.

How to color your grasshopper drawing
Try bright green for the body and a lighter green for the legs, with a black eye. You could also color the wing line a darker green or add a grassy green background.
Grasshopper fun fact for kids
A grasshopper has five eyes: two big ones on the sides of its head and three tiny ones between them.
